The Brussels metropolitan area has about 2.5M inhabitants, hence being about the same size as the greater Vancouver area. Here's a picture of the last bit of city wall - which was founded in 979 AD.

As an historic city, you will find many large buildings (we have yet to do a more extended tour):

The atomium is the landmark symbol of the 1958 World Fair, and offers a good view of the city. It has been renovated in 2007. In the vertical there is an elevator, but some (?) of the other connecting pipes contain escalators (see pic):

On August 15th we visited the Grand Place of Brussels for the annual flower carpet, good weather to take some pictures of the buildings there too:

With a group from work I went to visit the Marollen, starting at the palace of justice:
There used to be many bars in this part of Brussels. Many people rent:
The area is becoming popular, but quite a few houses are still in decay:

These red buildings form a social housing block, with easily inspectable alleys between the buildings:
You can find many paintings like these on the building ends. The heap of rubbish is right next to a sign forbidding to dump (150euro fine) ofcourse:

Fencing art:
Close to Midi (Brussels South train station):
A skating area right over the rails:
