Bern is the capital of Switzerland with a population of only 128,000 (agglomeration ~350,000 though). We visited Bern the second-last day of our 2008 summer holiday (Monday August 4th). A pretty and very clean city which is well maintained. The river Aare runs through the city - around the old part of the town:
This is one of the main streets in the old town that features shopping/eating arcades on each side. Along the street you also find many access doors to cellars under the already seriously big buildings:
The Zytglogge clock tower is one of the city's best-known symbols, and features all kinds of mechanical entertainment systems (which we didn't see work though):
The Aare provides wonderful sights:
The Münster cathedral is located right next to the river and has a small park with entertainment for the young ones:
The tower of the Münster is under continuous maintenance and was also only partially visible during the soccer tournament this summer - you can visit the both at the bottom and top section of the part that is being renovated:
The front of the cathedral contains one of the most complete art works of the last judgement:
Next are some views from different levels of the tower (you can take pictures while ascending too !):
The size of the cathedral has changed somewhat over time:
Aerial view of the park with 4 patches of grass:

Inside the cathedral:
The Zytglogge clock tower from closeby on street level:

Finally, we visited the rose garden, which provides some nice views of the city as well:
